For Nadia, a 15-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl, the path to education on the first day of classes on Monday meant a long detour around earth barricades the Israeli army piled on a West Bank road. "It is not a good start to the day," said Nadia, who declined to give her surname, as she walked about two km (one mile) to school near the Palestinian city of Ramallah. More than a million students, about a third of the Palestinian population, flocked to schools in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Arab East Jerusalem. In the West Bank city of Nablus, students and other Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers mounting sweeps for suspected militants. Troops responded with live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, wounding 15 people, witnesses said. Education officials said many students and teachers were tardy after delays at checkpoints the Israeli military has erected in the Palestinian territories. Israel says the roadblocks are crucial for stopping suicide bombers, who had made Israeli children on Sunday start their own school year by filing past armed guards as a precaution against Palestinian attacks. Palestinians and human rights groups call the barriers collective punishment. "After a long wait (at checkpoints), I do not have the appetite for teaching," said Jawad Aasi, a math teacher at Ramallah Boys' school. "During class, I will be thinking of how I am going to make it back home instead of focusing on the lesson." In the divided West Bank city of Hebron, which is under Israeli curfew, Palestinian and Israeli liaison officials coordinated the return to class. Fifi Shawar, six, waited for an Israeli soldier to search her school bag before entering her school. "I want to get my education no matter what," Shawar said.
