Many Palestinians greatly appreciated the gesture by the Palestinian Authority of granting the renowned Maestro Daniel Barenboim Palestinian citizenship. But once again like everything else in our part of the world, one cannot but reflect on the paradox of this gesture. After the Oslo agreements in 1993, the Palestinian flag and passport, the long awaited symbols of statehood have become normal despite the non-existence of the state itself. As our identity has continuously and unsuccessfully been challenged since 1948, these symbols seemed a positive step towards consolidating our identity. It was not long ago when one would serve time in Israeli jails for displaying a Palestinian flag, yet children had their way of expressing their yearning for the white, green black and red colors of the flag through their art work. Mothers have all along been innovative in knitting those colors into sweaters and scarves. This is not a challenge anymore, and the sense of innovation in resisting the occupation has taken a different track. Unfortunately, with the failure, so far, of the peace process and after thirteen long and frustrating years, these symbols transpired to be mere crumbs diverting our attention from the main meal since we remain under military occupation, denied sovereignty and all our national and human rights. For us in Jerusalem, we did not even have a taste of those crumbs. We are Palestinians but cannot carry Palestinian passports, because Israel will then deprive us of our Jerusalem Identity card which allows us permanent residency in the City. However because we had carried Jordanian passports before 1967 we were allowed to maintain those passports, though any other passport along with the Jordanian passport will jeopardize our right of residency. Of course the Israelis can carry as many passports as they please and that does not affect their right of being a citizen or a resident of the country. By being granted Palestinian citizenship, Maestro Barenboim would still be able to maintain his Israeli and Argentinian citizenships as well as any other that he might have acquired. Being away from the country for over a period of three years is another way of depriving us of our residency rights. So many people, mostly students who had to stay abroad for more than the stipulated period have lost their right of residency. Very often they are not even allowed to come back for a visit, or they are given a visa for a very limited period. Even in the West Bank where the residents have Palestinian citizenship, it is Israel which controls borders and determines who can come in or stay in the country. Yes indeed it was very nice that our President has taken the initiative to grant Maestro Barenboim Palestinian citizenship, yet how truly sad and ironical that he has no say or power whatsoever as to the destiny of his own people despite all the concessions that the Palestinian Authority has made to accommodate for the Israeli demands.
