UN Resolution 1325
UN Resolution 1325
A Vision for Palestinian Womens Rights Organizations based on the Global Study on the Implementation of UNSCR 1325
(Ten strategies for tackling issues pertaining to Women, Peace and Security)
Date posted: August 01, 2006

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) strongly condemns the killing of 67 Lebanese civilians in an Israeli air raid on the South Lebanon village of Qana. The clear targeting of a building housing civilians, mostly children, seeking shelter from the incessant Israeli bombings is an abhorrent act that must not only be condemned in the strongest terms but must also urge for international pressure to hold Israel responsible for its war crimes being perpetrated in Lebanon and in the Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip.

MIFTAH calls on the international community, namely the United States, to ensure an immediate cessation of Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Palestine and for Israel to be held accountable for the scores of civilian deaths and the destruction of much of Lebanon's infrastructure over the past two weeks. It also calls for an internationally-sponsored solution to the conflict between Israel and Lebanon that would guarantee the safeguarding from any future Israeli attacks. It also calls for a cessation of Israeli hostilities in the Gaza Strip in which dozens of innocent civilians have been killed or injured.

MIFTAH also stresses the importance of protecting civilians in times of war and demands that Israel adhere to international laws and charters in this regard. The fact that half of the civilian deaths in Qana were sleeping children necessitates the urgency of such a guarantee that would force Israel to bear the consequences of its atrocities.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
