Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

(Ramallah), Palestinian Legislative Council Member for the Third Way parliamentary bloc and Head of MIFTAH’s Executive Committee, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, met today with Austria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ursula Plassnik, at MIFTAH’s offices in Ramallah to discuss the latest political and field developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Dr. Ashrawi reiterated her concerns regarding Israel’s continued policies of fragmenting the Palestinian territories, through the construction of the Annexation Wall, the construction and expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank, the isolation of east Jerusalem, among other detrimental measures that undermine the prospects of peace and pre-empt the outcome of possible final status negotiations. She also highlighted the latest wave of Israeli military assaults against the Gaza Strip in recent months, which have claimed the lives of 375 Palestinians, more than half of whom are civilians (non-combatants).

On the political level, Dr. Ashrawi expressed her alarm concerning Israel’s policy of unilateralism, which, she stressed, have come to epitomize the failures of Israel’s overall policy towards the Palestinians, and affirmed that a negotiated solution on the basis of existing legal foundations is the only viable option; most notably Israel’s withdrawal to the June 1967 boundaries, in accordance with UN Resolution 242.

Ashrawi also discussed with the Foreign Minister the latest internal developments concerning the formation of a Palestinian national unity Government, highlighting that, regardless of the composition of the cabinet, a new Palestinian Government must be founded on professionalism, integrity, and ability to deliver essential services to the Palestinian population. She voiced her concerns that the existing state of lawlessness, deteriorating economic conditions, and the disintegration of the Palestinian system of governance are threatening the complete collapse of the occupied Palestinian territories.

Dr. Plassnik reaffirmed the need to overcome the current Palestinian political crisis by paving the way for the formation of a Palestinian national unity Government, which is capable of moving the peace process forward on the one hand, and able to deliver the Palestinian people out of economic strangulation on the other. Plassnik also expressed her belief that the European Union is bent on continuing to play a key role in the region, including a concerted effort to facilitate the resumption of political dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as the continuation of co-operation on the developmental level.
