Eid Al-Adha in the Gaza Strip was marked with clashes and kidnappings between rival Fateh and Hamas factions. On the third day of Eid, 14 people were reportedly kidnapped, 11 were Hamas members, while 3 were Fateh loyalists. Clashes between the two factions continued, despite the intervention of other party leaders. Several innocent bystanders were injured in exchanges of fire.

An announcement was later made by an Islamic Jihad leader promising that a “code of honor” will be issued and signed in the near future in order to restore calm and security to Palestinian streets. PFLP and Jihad leaders later negotiated the release of those kidnapped and ensured their safe return.

Apparently, clashes got out of hand when a group of armed men invaded Al-Awda hospital and kidnapped a wounded man that they were seeking, eliciting outcries from hospital personnel and other community leaders for breaching the sanctity of a medical facility. The kidnapped man was later returned to resume treatment for his injuries.

The spate of kidnappings extended to a Peruvian photographer, Jaime Razuri, 50, for Agence France Press (AFP). Razuri, who is still being held by his captors, was returning with his translator to the AFP offices in Gaza City, when four unmasked men threatened them at gunpoint and snatched the photographer.

Peruvian and French officials have demanded information, but the unknown assailants have not come forward and Razuri’s fate is yet to be determined. AFP Chairman and CEO Pierre Louette condemned the kidnapping by saying that “…those whose job is to report, in text and photos, the most difficult situations around the world can’t be used and taken hostage.”

The Foreign Press Association (FPA) and the Palestinian Union of Journalists both denounced the attack as an infringement on the freedom of press and demanded that the necessary measures are taken by the PNA in order to protect it.

Earlier today, Al-Jazeera TV in Arabic reported that foreign aid workers and journalists were advised to evacuate the Gaza Strip, because of mounting abduction threats against foreign nationals.
