Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

(Jerusalem, 13/1/2007): The Media Monitoring Unit of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) has called upon Palestinian journalists and media professionals to formulate a code of ethics in order to govern Palestinian journalism on the basis of objectivity, transparency, and accuracy, in an attempt to ensure that professional considerations remain the key priority in the coverage of events in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The recommendation was issued through the Unit’s first special issue (report) concerning the coverage of Palestinian newspapers of the bloody events that took place in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in early October 2006. MIFTAH has also renewed its call for the establishment of an independent higher media council vested with the authority to monitor and guide, rather than censor, Palestinian media coverage. This council, MIFTAH stressed, should operate in isolation of any interference from the Palestinian Authority, in a climate that is conducive to freedom of expression.

MIFTAH urged media institutions to allocate special focus on training its employees to conduct inquisitive and objective reporting, and provide them with sufficient resources and time to conduct journalistic inquiries, in order to ensure accuracy and credibility.

In its report, entitled “The Bloody Sunday,” in reference to the day that 9 Palestinians were killed as a result of internal strife, MIFTAH’s Media Monitoring Unit identified some absence of professional standards in the media’s coverage of the clashes, in addition to a clear departure from neutrality and objectivity in conveying the events. It also concluded that the media had contributed, in varying degrees, to the escalation of tensions in the days preceding the events, particularly as a result of the intensity and overemphasis in its coverage.
