The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH strongly condemns the recent escalation in Israeli military operations in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in the deaths of nine Palestinians in the past 24 hours.

Six Palestinians were killed by Israeli army fire on Saturday, April 21. In the Jenin Refugee Camp, three young men, Mohammed Jalil from the Islamic Jihad’s Al Quds Brigades, Abbas Al Darij and Ahmad Issa from the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, were killed in a raid by Israeli special forces into the camp. Seventeen-year-old Bushra Barghish was also killed when troops, who were reportedly looking for her brother, opened fire.

Also killed on Saturday was a Palestinian policeman in a Jenin-area village and 42-year old Kamal Anan who shot down by Israeli troops in the Jabaliya Refugee Camp in the northern Gaza Strip.

On Sunday, two Aqsa Martyrs Brigades operatives were killed in a lengthy armed confrontation with invading Israeli troops in Nablus. According to an Aqsa Martyrs Brigades communiqué, Amin Labadeh and Fadel Noor were killed in a five-hour gun battle with Israeli troops.

On the same day, 15-year-old Kareem Zahran was shot in the stomach and killed in the Ramallah-area village of Deir Abu Mashaal. Eyewitnesses say Israeli troops refused to allow the boy to reach immediate medical treatment, which led to Zahran bleeding to death.

MIFTAH strongly denounces the killings and the repeated Israeli incursions into Palestinian territories. It calls on the international community to force Israel to halt the bloodshed and commit to peace negotiations with the Palestinians that would bring an end to the Israeli occupation and allow the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state.

By escalating its military operations against the Palestinians, Israel is not only violating basic human rights, including the right to life, it is severely undermining any opportunity for an extension of the so-called truce to the West Bank and is also curbing Arab and international efforts to put the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative into action.
