Several students and journalists were injured yesterday, September 9 in the vicinity of Hebron University after Palestinian security forces broke up a gathering of the Islamic bloc directly outside the university campus.

The confrontations erupted after a university administration decision not to allow the Islamic bloc to hold its conference on the university campus. There is already an ongoing suspension of some classes in protest of the university’s cancellation of student loans, which was the university’s declared reason for banning the conference. The university maintains that it has not cancelled the loans, but that funds for this purpose have not yet reached them. The Islamic bloc meeting was ostensibly in protest of the university’s decision to raise university tuitions and discuss the loan situation.

In response, the Islamic bloc decided to hold the gathering outside the campus gates, where protestors reportedly closed the streets and obstructed traffic to and from the university. PA security forces then moved in to break up the gathering, beating demonstrators with sticks and arresting several others. A number of journalists covering the event were also injured and taken to Al Ahli Hospital for treatment and were prohibited from filming or photographing the event.

Hebron University administration sources condemned the Islamic bloc actions, saying it exploited the event to score political points. Apparently, students from the bloc had tried to forcefully remove students from their classrooms in order to suspend classes in protest of the absence of student loans. When the administration refused to allow the bloc to hold its meeting inside the university, the conference was taken outside.

In a communiqué released later that day, Fateh held the Islamic bloc completely responsible for the mayhem and for the injuries incurred by the students and journalists, saying the demonstration was an attempt by the bloc to transfer the bloody Gaza confrontations to the West Bank.

In a similar communiqué, Hamas condemned the Fateh-backed security services for what they called the brutality in which these services broke up the conference. Members of the security forces reportedly beat demonstrators and opened fire at random during the protest.

Hamas PLC member Hatem Qafeesha is also calling on President Mahmoud Abbas to open an investigation into the Hebron University events and punish anyone who used excessive force against the demonstrators, journalists or passersby.

The Hebron University administration announced that classes would be suspended for three days in light of recent events and until calm is restored to the campus.
