“MIFTAH has taken on the task of changing the prevailing social culture based on marginalization and exclusion of the other, by working on the discourse of impacted sectors through various means to ensure that all sectors are up to date with modern communication techniques,” said Issa Al Amleh, dean of student affairs at the Arroub Technical College. Al Amleh was one participant in a training workshop entitled, “Methods of communication with the media and mechanisms for solving problems” organized by MIFTAH over the course of two days in Hebron. Al Amleh called for the need to support trainers, public speakers and rights activists in their dissemination of a culture of civic peace.

Another participant, Firas Abu Sharkh, director of the regional Islamic library in Hebron’s public library said the training was based on participation, dialogue and interaction in addition to the use of modern technical and media tools instead of the method of indoctrination.

Sheikh Salah Abu Halaweh also attended the workshop, saying it helped shed light on the issue of inheritance and increase knowledge about it. The leadership committee in Hebron adopted the subject of inheritance as a priority given that it is the right of marginalized men and women in society.

Islamic Shariya lawyer Sana Abu Mideya maintained that she was now able to draft messages addressing society with the use of modern communications methods, saying the training was unique in its methods of dialogue and the broadening of horizons in terms of information and ideas. She said the training would have a positive impact on her work in the courts, adding that this would enable some changes in decisions pertaining to the personal status law and in carrying out these decisions on the ground if a judicial authority is set up that could apply the necessary pressure.

In all, 18 male and female social activists participated in the training workshop, conducted by trainer Fida’ Barghouti who said the participants wanted tools to enable them to develop their discourse using modern media means. Barghouti said they were able to come out with clear, specific and professional messages aimed towards the mentality and general conceptions of the public in regards to the issue of inheritance.

The participants called for the need to continue working on creating a society free of violence and oppression against weak and marginalized sectors, women in particular, and for the use of modern media to support and advocate on contentious social issues.

Project coordinator Najwa Yaghi Sandouka said the committee of social leaders included public speakers, counselors and community problem solvers from both sexes in addition to some academicians and civil society representatives. She said the committee worked through the media to raise awareness and put pressure on decision-makers in the judicial system in order to come up with measures that would facilitate the implementation of inheritance laws and support marginalized sectors in obtaining their rights.

Sandouka added that the training workshop was part of the “Gender-based violence and women’s empowerment” project in coordination with UNFPA. MIFTAH followed up with social leaders in Hebron, whose goal is to involve males in gender issues in order to reach social justice in the community.
