Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

On January 13, MIFTAH held a roundtable meeting with representatives from the Palestinian political and social active youth network in which the members were briefed on the outcomes of discussions to revive the General Union of Palestinian Students [GUPS]. The meeting also showcased the latest developments pertaining to the political youth document, which is considered a general framework for galvanizing youth efforts in political participation and supporting them to reach decision-making positions.

The participants stressed on the need to make the necessary amendments to GUPS’s bylaws so as to include representation of Palestinian universities and to set a time limit for membership and posts within the union. They also recommended continued pressure on relevant parties to speed up procedures for holding the GUPS general conference, pointing out that that conference held was in Baghdad, Iraq in 1990.

In terms of the youth political document, the participants stressed on the importance of continuing the dialogue with the Higher Council for Youth and Sports so as to adopt the youth document as a general framework for reviving the role of youth in public affairs. This, they said, could be achieved through creating real political partnership within the Palestinian political system.

Presentations from the network’s representatives confirmed the need to document the cooperation with student council unions in Palestinian universities, especially with participants in discussions facilitated by MIFTAH, to guarantee the continuity of national efforts towards reviving GUPS.

MIFTAH projects coordinator Hassan Mahareeq pointed out that the meeting was part of the discussions sponsored by the organization within its program for supporting and empowering youth leaders. He also said it was in line with the strategic approaches through which MIFTAH seeks to provide an atmosphere of dialogue to encourage youths’ access to decision-making positions and in cooperation with active political parties towards reviving the youth platform, represented by GUPS, within the PLO.
