Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

‘Palestinian children, like any other, have the need to express their creative aspirations; this becomes even more important when freedom is restricted under the effect of a long term occupation’

The purpose of this summer camp is to give Palestinian children an opportunity to engage with their oral history as told by selected local Palestinian elders and with a focus on the positive side of Palestinian culture and history. The children will then work in an open lab environment to create artworks inspired by the storytelling sessions and mentored by Palestinian artists from diverse fields of artistic practice.

‘Hakawati’ is the Arabic word for a storyteller, a Hakawati will work as facilitator to provide the interaction between the elders and the children, and to make the sessions informative, focused and entertaining.

By providing the children with a range of options to create their artwork and encourage them take initiative, we hope to provide the right creative environment and a positive outlook to life in a future Palestine.

Positive aspects of culture

It is common practice in Palestine to highlight the modern history of disposition, occupation, and restriction of freedom. This, even though it strengthen the patriot values, creates a vacuum, and lack of appreciate of the Palestinian culture, a culture full of beautiful memories of a land with people and a people with culture.

Self expression through art

The children will have the choice of the medium they prefer to use to create their artwork – film, photography, painting, theatre, dance, music, and sculpture – no mater which medium, the artists will work with the children to realize their ideas and create artworks inspired by the storytelling sessions.
