Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

During a press conference in Jerusalem today between US Vice President Dick Cheney and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Mr. Cheney stated that the coming weeks " would be crucial: Mr. Arafat must issue clear instructions to stop the violence."

Not only has the visit of the Vice President to the region echoed the familiar pattern of US failures to understand the reality of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but also more strikingly, it has underlined the current administration's wholehearted adoption of Sharon's policies of battering the Palestinians into submission, and holding them responsible for the security of their occupier.

The patterns of logic seem to have been lost along the way between a biased US administration and a radical Israeli government bent on sustaining occupation through distortion, political intoxication, and, of course, through a systematic policy of brute military force against a defenseless Palestinian population.

"End the violence, end the violence, and end the violence!" What seems to (apparently) escape the US "vision" for reestablishing calm in the region and re-igniting Palestinian-Israeli political dialogue is the fact that Israel has implemented the most cruel forms of militarism, suppression, and humiliation on the Palestinians, through continued violation of human rights, shelling, killing, assassination, and siege; not to mention an illegal 35-year old (54 years since Al-Nakba) occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Meanwhile, Cheney's words only add more conditions to an already unworkable Israeli formula, whereby the Palestinians are expected to accept Israel's assaults without questioning, without resistance, and even be held accountable for the escalation of violence. Cheney affirmed that Arafat would have to fulfill certain conditions if he were to meet with him "somewhere" in the region "sometime" in the near future! Arafat, according to Cheney, must start implementing the Tenet "ceasefire" plan; this is nothing short of (willful) political naiivety. The imperatives for implementing Tenet are bound with Israel's withdrawal to the September 2000 boundaries, let alone its cessation of aggression against the Palestinians.

For Sharon, taking the insult a step further is a privilege; Sharon clearly stated that, while Arafat will be allowed to leave the Palestinian areas (thus be able to attend the upcoming Arab Summit in Beirut), he may not be allowed back should there be any "…acts of violence against Israel" (the definition of violence, of course, is once again Israel's part of the commitment.)

Unfortunately, repeated Palestinian calls on the international community to end Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories seem too optimistic at such times, when the advocates of "absolute justice" are disastrously failing to comprehend the obsolete concepts of colonialist ideologies.
