Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH), is seriously alarmed at the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories, in light of this mornings incident (2:00am July 15, 2002) in Ramallah, during which Israeli forces attacked the Palnet office building, resulting in the cutting off internet access to the majority of Palestinians living in Ramallah, Gaza and east Jerusalem.

The Israeli army stormed the office building where six Palnet employees were believed to be staying in order to maintain Internet service during this difficult time in which most of the West Bank and over 1 million Palestinians remain under military curfew. Explosions were heard and the fate of the six Palnet employees is unknown. It is important to note that the Internet is being used by Palestinian colleges and universities as a means for education under curfew; thus this attack is targeting the heart of Palestinian empowerment, the educational institutions.

This latest escalation serves as another attempt to cut the Palestinians living under curfew in Ramallah off from the international world, taking away their only means for international communication and education in this difficult time. Defenseless Palestinians trapped in their homes are being denied their most basic human rights.

MIFTAH condemns this latest escalation and calls on the international community to intervene in putting an end to Israel's occupation and curfew policy, which is suffocating the Palestinian people, politically, economically and socially.
