Letter to Members of Congress Who Voted Against or Abstained from Voting in Support of Resolution 713
By MIFTAH
July 16, 2004

Dear Representatives:

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue & Democracy, (MIFTAH), thanks you for your courageous and principled refusal to vote in favor of Resolution 713. This resolution sought not only to discredit the International Court of Justice’s July 9th ruling as to the illegality of the separation wall being built by Israel on the occupied territories, but also to undermine the validity of the United Nations and the international community itself. We applaud your efforts to prevent its passage, and, in so doing, your efforts to rise above the narrow confines of domestic politics to defend the universal principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of law, which together comprise the foundation of every democratic nation.

The actions of you courageous men and women have reminded us all of the tremendous responsibility that politicians bear as guardians of the rectitude of nations, and, as well, of the possibilities of democracy.

Sincerely,

MIFTAH
