Sharon Party wants to Fix Borders of Israel
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's new centrist party is committed to setting the permanent borders of the state of Israel should it win a March election, a leaked copy of its manifesto said. "The supreme goal of the government led by Kadima is to maintain the existence of the State of Israel as a safe national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel," the Maariv daily quotes the Kadima manifesto as saying. "The Kadima party views the promotion of the peace process with the Palestinians as a central goal... to lay the foundations to shape the permanent borders of the State of Israel and reach peace and quiet," it continued. At a recent party meeting, Maariv quoted MP Roni Bar-On as saying that the permanent borders will include all Jerusalem and the main Jewish settlement blocs in the West Bank of Ariel, Gush Etzion and Maale Adumim. The platform also speaks explicitly of the establishment of a Palestinian state but rejects the return of any Palestinian refugees to Israeli territory. The party expresses its commitment to the internationally drafted roadmap as the only peace plan and vows to work to implement the blueprint in 2006, undertaking to evacuate illegal Jewish outposts in the West Bank. The manifesto, which also calls for a change to a more presidential system of government, will be submitted to Sharon and Kadima in the next few days to be approved, Maariv reported. Opinion polls have consistently predicted that Kadima will emerge as the largest power in parliament after the March 28 election, with the latest survey giving it more than double the number of seats of its nearest rivals.
