Eid is a time of joyful family gatherings and friends. People get a chance to reflect and relax with their loved ones. But alas for Palestinians, their celebrations have been overshadowed by the latest Israeli announcement that colony construction and expansion in the West Bank, excluding homes, will continue. The latest proposal by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a 10-month suspension to the construction of new colony homes (and not public buildings like schools, libraries and police stations) in the West Bank is ridiculous to say the least. Netanyahu had the audacity to add that Occupied East Jerusalem is non-negotiable when he said: "My position it is well known, I do not impose any restriction on building in [Occupied] Jerusalem." What's even more alarming is US reaction to this counterproductive proposal. George Mitchell, the US special envoy to the Middle East, called it ‘significant', adding, "It falls short of a full settlement [colony] freeze, but it is more than any Israeli government has done before." This rhetoric, which is immensely disappointing, is a strong indication that Washington is softening its message on colonies. Israel is making a mockery of the entire world and it stands unchallenged. Instead of actually standing up to Tel Aviv, US president Barack Obama is giving in too soon and at a time when he can actually make a difference. Even if it means a showdown between the two historically close friends, Obama should not waste this opportunity. Calling Israel out on its illegal colony activities could have been the start of a more appropriate and feasible relationship between the two countries. Obama needs to know that no Palestinian leader, including Mahmoud Abbas, can accept illegal Israeli carving of Palestinian land. In fact, not only should Israel cease its colony construction and expansion in the West Bank and Occupied East Jerusalem, it must dismantle them altogether. They are illegal under international law and they stand against any just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
