GAZA, October 4, 2005 (IPC + Agencies) - - Israeli occupation authorities deployed hundreds of soldiers and police officers throughout the holy city of Jerusalem, coinciding with the Jewish new year and the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. This deployment also coincided with the intention of Uzi Landau, the extremist Israeli Knesset member, to visit the holy Al Aqsa Mosque, following the path of current prime minister Ariel Sharon, whose visit to the Mosque in September 2000 sparked the Al Aqsa Intifada.

Local sources asserted that dozens of military roadblocks were set up on the streets of Jerusalem, as military patrols roamed the streets and public places. Soldiers were also stationed at the gates of Jerusalem's old city, while the main entrance to the Arab neighborhood of Selwan was closed to allow the buses that are transporting hundreds of settlers to reach the Western Wall.

Eyewitnesses told WAFA news agency that Israeli soldiers have refused to allow Palestinians holding West Bank ID cards and medical permits to enter Jerusalem for treatment, along with hundreds of merchants, employees and students under the pretext of a lockdown on the occupied Palestinian territories.

The witnesses pointed out that the military checkpoint of Qalandia, between the West Bank and Jerusalem, has witnessed massive traffic jams on both sides, due to the prolonged and slow vetting measures of the soldiers manning the checkpoint.

On the other hand, Israeli soldiers conducted large search campaigns in the old city of Jerusalem, where they detained dozens of Palestinian youth and checked their ID cards.

The residents of Jerusalem confirmed that Israel has deliberately dampened the mood in the city to disrupt the joy of receiving the holy month of Ramadan, by intensifying the military measures in the city and further limiting the age of Muslim worshippers allowed into the Al Aqsa Mosque.

They further mentioned that these measures have been exacerbated by the recent news about Landau's expected visit to Al Aqsa Mosque, which he intended as publicity stunt to draw attention to his campaign to lead the Likud Party.
