Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Ms. King:

Regarding your statement in today's column "U.S. Diplomat Urges Israelis to Start Following 'Road Map'":

"Another factor in the Israeli public's apparent willingness to weigh alternatives to Sharon's policies is the relative calm that has prevailed lately . The last major Palestinian attack aimed at Israeli civilians was in early October a suicide bombing in the northern port city of Haifa that killed 21 people."

The Haifa suicide bombing that killed 21 people took place on October 5.  Since that time, a minimum of at least 50 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed, and hundreds more wounded, along with a variey of other devastating activities at the hands of the Israelis. On Oct. 18, 14 Palestinians were killed by Israeli incursions into al-Salam and al-Brasil neighborhoods in Rafah, and 24 were wounded; on Oct 20, 3 Palestinians were killed by Israeli aerial attacks on Gaza City; on Oct. 21, 7 Palestinians were killed and 58 injured by 2 Israeli aerial attacks on the Gaza Strip; on Nov. 8, 9 Palestinians were killed by Israeli occupying forces; on Nov. 11, 1 Palestinian child was killed and 23 houses were demolished by Israeli forces in Rafah; On Nov. 14, an elderly Palestinian man from Hebron was killed when an Israeli settler ran him over while he was walking on a bypass road to the west of the town; Nov. 15, Israeli occupying forces shot dead a Palestinian child during an incursion into Beit Fourik village ; On Nov. 16, Israeli occupying forces shot dead a Palestinian civilian when he left his house in Rafah to check what was going on following an Israeli incursion into al-Shouka neighborhood in the southeast of the town; On Nov. 17, a Palestinian resistance man was killed in clashes with Israeli occupying forces in Tulkarm refugee camp; and on Nov. 27, 3 unarmed Palestinians were killed by Israelis in the Gaza Strip.

In just one week alone (week of Nov. 13 - 19), and aside from the killing of the 4 Palestinians stated above, Israeli forces conducted a series of incursions into Palestinian areas in the West Bank and Gaza Strip; 14 houses were destroyed in Rafah; areas of agricultural land were razed in the Gaza Strip; houses were raided and a number of Palestinians were arrested; construction of the “separation wall” continued in the West Bank, indiscriminate shelling of Palestinian residential areas continued and a number of Palestinian civilians were injured; and a Palestinian house in Rafah was destroyed by Israeli forces as part of the continued campaign of retaliation against the families of Palestinians accused of involvement in attacks against Israeli targets.

The week of Nov. 6 - 12, 17 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed by Israelis, along with all kinds of other human rights violations.

This is just a sampling of activity that has taken place in that region since the date you claim relative calm has since prevailed.  Relative calm?  Relative to what?  I must ask you, honestly , what is your definition of relative calm ?
