Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Dear Editor:

Thank you for publishing Mr. Marwan Barghouti's article (Want Security? End the Occupation). A commendable step forward by the Post towards attaining editorial balance vis-a-vis the Palestine-Israeli conflict (after what is, in my humble opinion, a prevalent pro-Israeli editorial stance by the Post).

Yet, it should be noted, Mr. Barghouti's voice does not exactly parallel the (George) Wills and (Charles) Krauthammers of the Palestinian political sphere; his views -and those of the Fatah party in general- are considered 'compromising' (Leftist, if you will) by the common Palestinian. Certainly, Mr. Barghouti does not speak for all Palestinians when he says "Palestinians have recognized Israel on 78 percent of historic Palestine. It is Israel that refuses to acknowledge Palestine's right to exist on the remaining 22 percent of land occupied in 1967."

Whereas, Fatah, polls show, still holds support of 50% of the Palestinian street, it is only because President Arafat has not abandoned the right of return --at least not officially or publicly. I strongly doubt that any more than a few, if any, of the refugee camps' Palestinians, in particular, have accepted disinheritance. Let me put it this way: when Jews accept disinheritance and denial of their right of return (even to their original countries); when Jews forgive the Nazis, Palestinians will follow suit. Ultimately, I believe, both sides will give up fundamentalism to coexist in equity. But, this, still, huge gap in positions must be clearly stated, because it helps all parties to understand the perspectives and realities. This is the fist step, no doubt, in reaching a deal --a compromise. That is why I thank the Post for taking this step.

(Note: advise those who will criticize you for publishing Mr. Barghouti's article to take their case to the UN. UNSCR 242 demands Israel withdraw its troops to pre-1967 lines; UNGAR 194 affirms the right of return to all displaced/dispossessed Palestinians).

Best regards,
Baha Abushaqra
