Media Coverage of Palestinian issue
Dear Mr. Lelyveld Thank you for your reply to my email on the media coverage of the Palestinian issue. I agree with you on one point. I do not think Palestinian suicide bombings against innocent civilians help the situation. I am opposed to all such acts of violence where it involves attacks against innocent civilians. However, even though I am opposed to the attacks on innocent Israeli civilians I do recognize that the suicide bombers are driven by despair and hopelessness and the crushing and illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian land in the occupied territories. The Israeli use of death squads to murder their opponents, the deliberate targeting and killing of children by Israeli troops and Jewish settlers, the illegal demolition of houses, the illegal confiscation of land, the illegal building of Jewish settlements all are provocation's which in turn lead to Palestinian responding to violence with violence. It is the Israeli acts of violence and illegal acts in expanding Jewish settlements that provoke a violent response. The massacres of Palestinians in 1947-1948, and ethnic cleansing and continued attacks on Palestinians civilians, including the 1982 Sabra and Shattilla Massacre, all provoke violence. The pervasive racism of Israeli civil and political structures against Palestinians are well documented by Israeli historians and academics (Benny Morris, Flappan Yitzhak Labor, Baruch Kimmerling, Uri Davis, Sammy Smooha and many others). The massive human rights abuses against Palestinians is again well documented by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Red Cross, the United Nations, UNICEF, Rabbis for Human Rights, B'Tselem the Israeli human rights organization, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel and even the United States Department Report on Human Rights on the Occupied Territories. All of these respected organizations and institutions all confirm terrible human rights abuses committed by the Israelis government and Jewish Settlers against Palestinians. The Palestinians also have their evidence that overwhelmingly proves that the Israeli government is set on systemically destroying them as a people and culture all in the name of establishing an racially pure "Jewish State." Yes I want all violence to stop but Israel's illegal expansion into what remains of Palestine is in itself violence and is the cause of the violent response and provokes a few desperate individuals to launch suicide attacks as they have nothing left to loose. It also is a war crime to impose collective punishment on an entire civilian population to punish them for the acts of violence of a few. Under international law every people under occupation has a legal right to resist an illegal occupation. Israel is destroying its moral legitimacy in the eyes of the world and severely damaging the reputation of the world Jewish community, as a whole, due to their reflexive defence of Israel's policies no matter how repugnant. Thankfully many Israelis and Jews through out the world are speaking out about human rights violations and illegal expansion of settlements in the Occupied Territories. I am attaching an article "Evil Unleashed" written by Tanya Reinhart, a Professor at Tel Aviv University which will help you understand what is really going on in Palestine today. Uri Davis's book Israel an Apartheid State is also excellent on documenting the racism towards Palestinians in Israeli society and institutions. Thank you for considering my letter and responding to it. Ed Corrigan Read More...
