Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) is gravely concerned about Friday night’s horrific incident, in which an Israeli soldier shot and killed British freelance cameraman, James Miller, as he was filming yet another Palestinian home being demolished by the occupation troops in Rafah close to the Egyptian border in Gaza.

James Miller was in the refugee camp of Rafah making a documentary on how Palestinian children are affected by violence. He was filming Israeli tanks, bulldozers and armored vehicles as they were demolishing a Palestinian home when he was fired upon unprovoked witnesses say.

"We got close to the area and filmed, but we couldn't leave because an (Israeli) tank was around 100 meters from where we stood," Abdel-Rahman Abdullah, a freelance Palestinian journalist who saw the night-time incident, told Reuters. "We were very visible to the troops, with a white flag and 'TV' markings on our vests, but still the troops opened fire, hitting James Miller," he said.

Israeli troops have killed and injured close to a dozen journalists, local and foreign, over the past thirty months. Troops have also killed half a dozen international workers and peace activists in total disregard to human life or their rights to be protected while performing their duties as relief workers or journalists operating in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Journalists and aid workers are protected by International Law and should not be threatened and targeted. Israel should not continue to be treated as a country above the law and should be held responsible and accountable for its grave violations before the international community.

MIFTAH calls on the international community to take immediate and responsible action to hold Israel accountable for the killings conducted by their occupation army throughout the West Bank and Gaza. We call on governments and human rights organizations to condemn Israeli actions which are yet to ensure the protection of journalists, foreign aid workers and innocent civilians throughout Gaza the West Bank including east Jerusalem.
