Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Ramallah - MIFTAH and the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics [PCBS] recently signed an agreement to conduct a survey on youth perspectives in regard to political participation in Palestinian universities and institutes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip on the trends of the student community in general and those of student councils, committees and student blocs in particular. The agreement is part of a third phase of the “Supporting Young Palestinian Women Political Leaders” project, funded by UNDP/PAPP.

The survey includes the student community in Palestinian universities and institutes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the student councils in these universities and the committees and youth representative bodies that are linked to them. The goal of the survey is to look into issues of political participation among youth in general and young women in particular.

Thus, the survey is aimed at contributing to the creation of a database for official data on the political participation of youths, with an emphasis on the participation of young Palestinian women in West Bank and Gaza universities. It will also contribute to providing statistical indicators of young Palestinian women’s political participation.

The survey is considered an important factor towards developing interventions that support women and youth reaching decision-making positions in society and also limiting all forms of discrimination against Palestinian women. This is a unique experience in that the indicators provided from the survey on youths’ political participation will also provide a window into the political and cultural knowledge of students; the extent of their knowledge in the legal context and the internal systems of movements and student blocs. It will also show the extent of awareness that students have on the concept of citizenship, including rights and obligations, political participation and the available mechanisms for supporting such participation. It will give an idea about the factors that influence the scope of political participation and empowerment and awareness programs. Such indicators will provide a main database suitable for all relevant parties interested in the mechanisms and development of overall performance in order to enable the elements of leadership society in promoting participation, good governance and raising social awareness on the rights and duties of good citizenship.

Training of the research teams conducted in the second week of October, so that data collection in the field could begin. Completion of this phase, including data analysis, is expected at the end of next month.

Within the same project in terms of intervention with a group of young women leaders in the Gaza Strip, MIFTAH held a session between September 20 and 30, 2014 aimed at allowing psychological release for the participants. This was in response to the needs of these participants, which they vocalized during the two-day preparatory meetings held at the end of last month following Israel’s latest offensive on the Gaza Strip. The meetings were held under the supervision of a specialized psychiatrist. The release session revolved around easing mental suffering and alleviating psychological pain through expressing their thoughts, impressions and feelings all through participation.

Also within the same project’s framework, MIFTAH plans this year to shoot a documentary film that embodies the overall stages of the project. It will mainly be based on constructing a narrative that reflects the goals and approaches of the project through a series of interviews and segments.
