Ramallah – As part of its efforts to promote the active participation of all components of Palestinian society, particularly youth and women, through empowering leaders capable of involvement at the decision-making levels who create impact and change at the local and national levels, MIFTAH recently completed training to empower young male and female candidates in local council elections. The training is part of its program to support and empower youth leaders, implemented in partnership with APIC (Arab Palestinian Investment Company).

The training sessions targeted candidates from electoral lists aged between 25-40 years old in all West Bank districts, to build their capacities and knowledge in managing local councils and empowering them during election campaigns and in reaching their audience, thus bolstering their chances in competing for local council seats.

The training addressed the laws and measures that regulate the election process and how to develop electoral programs by employing civic discourse revolved around the values of democracy and participation in the process, in addition to ways of empowering youth in actively participating in local elections.

Moreover, the training highlighted the importance of the media in reaching various social sectors, including social media skills, means of combatting hate speech during election campaigns and the caveats that threaten civic peace in communities.

On his part, MIFTAH project manager, Hassan Mahareeq, said the objective of the training was to empower youth and develop their leadership skills in order to promote their political participation in local elections and shed light on the opportunities available for their participation. He also said it aimed to overcome the political and legal obstacles that limit their participation.
