Over the past 72 hours, five people have been killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of renewed infighting between the two rival movements, Hamas and Fateh despite the formation of the new national unity government announced last week.

The clashes, which flared up on Wednesday in the Strip, have claimed several lives, including two-year-old Hasan Abul Nada, who was killed while inside his home. According to media sources, armed confrontations were taking place in the vicinity of Abul Nada’s home, particularly around the home of Samih Al Madhoun, an Aqsa Martyrs Brigade leader, the armed wing of Fateh. Along with the child, Al Madhoun’s bodyguard, Rami Srour, was also shot and killed and eight others injured. A third person, reportedly a Fateh loyalist, was also said to have been killed during the fighting.

Following the eruption of violence, Hamas and Fateh held an emergency meeting in the home of interior minister Hani Al Qawasmi on Friday evening in which the two sides agreed to halt all forms of inter-factional violence or confrontation. The agreement included a withdrawal of all armed elements from the streets and rooftops and the release of all abducted persons from both sides. The two parties also agreed to establish a joint office to deal with any violence of the agreement.

While relatives have confirmed that the abducted were being released, the violence continued, claiming two more lives on Friday evening, just hours after the meeting. Two bodies were found in different parts of the Gaza Strip belonging to 40-year-old teacher Mohammed Ayshan and 27-year-old Preventive Security officer Arfah Nofal.

While Ayshan’s body was found in the Salateen area in the northern Gaza Strip, Nofal was found near the home of martyr Ala’ Haddad, a member of the Izzedin Qassam Brigades, killed on March 14. Nofal’s body was reportedly riddled with several dozen bullets. Nofal had been kidnapped on Friday along with his colleague Nabil Miqdad. Miqdad’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Throughout the mayhem, several episodes of armed clashes, abductions and car and shop arson have taken place throughout the Strip. Both Hamas and Fateh are now holding the other responsible for the deaths of Nofal and Ayshan, although there has been no confirmation of the real identity of the perpetrators.
