Small Hands (A special issue on the 13th anniversary of the Child's Rights Agreement and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the International Movement for the Defense of Children-Palestine Branch)

Throughout the current Intifada the tools used and continue to be used by the occupation army in killing Palestinian children differ, but the common factor is the escalation in their bloodiness and randomness, not to mention that these tools also kill children in groups. Many incidents bare witness to this, especially during extra-judicial executions of Palestinian activists. In most cases, whether these operations were a success or a failure, according to Israeli assessments, Palestinian children were victims. One screaming example that targeted the lives of Palestinian children during extra-judicial killings is the assassination of Salah Shehada in al-Daraj residential quarter in Gaza in which 8 children were killed along with him.

According to statistics done by the International Movement for the Defense of Children, since the beginning of the Intifada and until 31-10-2002, 350 Palestinian children (under the age of 18) were killed.

Between 28-9-2000 and 31-12-2001, 94 Palestinian children were killed. During the year 2001, 98 children were killed. And during the first 10 months of the year 2002, 158 children were killed (%43 of Palestinian children killed during the current Intifada).

Of 350 children killed since the beginning of the Intifada, 62 children are under the age of 9 years, among these 45 were killed in the year 2002, 13 children in 2001 and 4 children in 2000. Between the ages of 9-15 years, 172 children were killed. 77 of these were killed in the past 10 months. 116 children between the ages of 16-17 years were killed.

The Israeli policy of killing children finds pretexts for its continuation. Among these excuses used by Israel on the international level is that the Palestinians take advantage of their children and use them as "human shields" on the front lines of confrontations. These excuses represent nothing but racism, the roots of which are deeply engraved in the mentality of occupation. It also represents a dedication for the continuation of the policy of killing children with the cover-up for this bloody policy ready.

Conclusions by the organization through statistics:

- A rise in the percentage of children killed during random shelling of Palestinian residential areas - 33% during the past 10 months, 17.4% in the year 2001 and 4% in the first 3 months of the Intifada.

- Mines left behind by the occupation army in areas of armed confrontations are on the increase. 12 children killed by explosive objects planted by the Israeli army in the past 10 months and 7 children 2001.

- An increase in the number of children killed as a result of the strangling closure imposed by the occupation army on Palestinian areas. Cases documented by the organization reveal that 8 children died during the first 10 months of 2002 as a result of delays and military roadblocks, 2 children in 2001 and 1child in 2000.

225 children were killed with heavy and explosive bullets (internationally illegal). 52 children were killed in missile and rocket attacks. 7 children were killed as a result of home demolition activities while they were inside.

The occupation army uses tools of increasing violence in killing Palestinians children. In the past 10 months, half of the children were killed more than one injury throughout the body, one third (31children) in the year 2001.

86% of children this year were killed at a time when no confrontations were taking place.
