Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

While the visit of US Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region is predictably mounting to little more than crisis management, damage control, and 'band aid diplomacy,' the situation on the ground is deteriorating to unprecedented levels, and the humanitarian crisis in the West Bank is threatening to gain new momentum by the inevitable spread of lethal diseases, the impact of economic hardship, and the widespread shortages in food, water, electricity, and medicine; all caused by Israel's brute policy of preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the latest Palestinian victims of Israel's wave of aggression.

Meanwhile, and ironically in the name of "security" and a campaign to root out "Palestinian terrorism," the Israeli army continues its own campaign of terror against a captive and civilian Palestinian population, whose very existence is under immediate threat. Since March 28th, when the Sharon government began to implement its premeditated plan to terrorize the Palestinians and undermine and destroy the Palestinian leadership and infrastructure, Israeli forces killed more than 500 Palestinians, injured thousands, and arrested more than 4,100 (not to mention that a complete Israeli-imposed media blackout in the occupied territories can only bear witness to Israel's attempts to hide the truth and forever conceal the horrors of its atrocities).

The Powell visit cannot (and will not) achieve progress without a comprehensive assessment of the real issues and the root causes of the conflict, rather than the mere consideration of the immediate developments and effects of the violence. The Bush administration must finally come to terms with the fact that Israel is an illegal occupation in the Palestinian territories, and that only an end to this occupation will bring peace and security to both Palestinians and Israelis.

A word of caution must be said regarding the US approach and what has so far been the Bush administration's full adoption of Sharon's policies and shortsighted interpretation of reality in the Palestinian territories: the only solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a political solution. The Israeli government has fully exploited the "war against terrorism" analogy to sustain its occupation and bash the Palestinians into submission; yet Israel is not the US, Sharon is not Bush, and the Palestinians are not Taliban. The Palestinians are a nation living under Israeli military occupation, whose legal, political, and moral rights have been repeatedly violated by consecutive Israeli governments, not least under the current government of General Ariel Sharon. Put an end to the violence by ending the atrocities and by ending the Israeli Occupation!
