Greenwashing the Occupation
February 01, 2012
By Julie Holm for MIFTAH

One of the things that have affected me greatly from all the horrors of the Israeli occupation is the uprooting of Palestinian olive trees. In Palestine, olive trees are valued for their historical presence, their beauty, symbolic connotations, and most importantly for their economic significance. Unfortunately it is not rare that we hear of Palestinian olive trees being uprooted or burned by the Israeli army or by settlers. Often, if the trees are not burned or destroyed by bulldozers they are brought to settlements and replanted as a kind of war token, a symbol of everything the Israelis rob from the Palestinians.

But it is not just the uprooting and stealing of trees that is used by Israel as a tool in the occupation. They actually plant trees on Palestinian land, covering up ethnic cleansing with environmental concerns...

Resenting the Lights of Jerusalem
January 30, 2012
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH

The first time I came to Palestine I was nine years old. This was also the first time I saw what my parents simply called “the lights of Jerusalem” visible from the balcony of my grandparents’ house in the village of Bir Nabala. One clear summer night, my mother stood with me on the open balcony overlooking lush green hills covered in olive groves out between the mountains on the horizon. In the distance were the colored lights of a city. This, said my mother, is Jerusalem, before she proceeded into a lively recap of her childhood years trudging along those same mountains to her elementary school in Beit Hanina...

Exploratory Talks Over; Palestinians Say No Return to Table [January 22 - January 28]
January 28, 2012
By MIFTAH

The Quartet Committee deadline of January 26 has come and passed after yet another failed attempt to get Palestinians and Israelis back to direct negotiations. After the last meeting in Amman on January 25, Palestinians put the blame squarely on Israel for the lack of progress. Presidential advisor Nabil Abu Rdeineh said on January 27 that Israel did not provide anything to build upon.

Change in Political Landscape Leaves Hamas in Financial Shortfall
February 02, 2012
By Hugh Naylor
In The National

Keeping up with the dramatic changes in the political map of the Middle East is one reason the leaders of Hamas are buzzing around the region in an unprecedented diplomatic campaign. Another less talked about reason is money. The rulers of the Gaza Strip are desperate for it, analysts say. The group's leader, Khaled Meshaal, and its prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, have spent recent weeks visiting eight countries including Jordan and Qatar. Such trips would have been almost unthinkable before the Arab Spring.

Israel Adds to its Crimes
February 02, 2012
By George S. Hishmeh
In Gulf News, 2 February. 2012

Ten years ago about 50 Israeli soldiers, including some officers, refused to serve in the Occupied Territories, roughly the size about 22 per cent of the original state, Palestine, which until mid-1948 was a mandate under British rule. A declaration by these angry soldiers loudly protested against Israel's campaign to "dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people".
