It is probably one of the worst periods ever for Palestinians. Not only are they isolated internationally, but regionally, Arab countries, so vociferous in their support, and, belatedly, in their financial assistance, are still unwilling to face down the international community and guarantee losses to banks so any financial penalties they may incur by defying the US and transferring money to the Palestinian Authority are offset. Much, much worse than this isolation, however, is the fact that united, Palestinians themselves could have faced down the international sanctions. After all, international aid to Palestinians has increased, not decreased since Hamas took power. Not enough, admittedly, to even out the money Israel is withholding, by far the biggest chunk missing, but nevertheless, enough to survive. All it would have taken was cooperation between the presidency and the government, between Fateh and Hamas. Instead, the two factions have decided to fight over their sandpit. It is almost too late to step back. Yesterday’s interview in the Israeli daily Haaretz with Gaza and Fateh strongman Mohammad Dahlan, makes all Palestinians look much deeper into the abyss. And as the saying goes, if you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss will eventually stare back into you. Dahlan was neither compromising nor did he shy away from controversy. He accused Hamas of murdering other Palestinians merely for being Fateh members. No compromise there. He said Fateh was happy to rely on the will of the people. Controversial, in view of the fact that Fateh clearly was uncomfortable with that arrangement just one year ago. What guarantee that Fateh will abide by the will of the people next time? Fateh and Hamas are struggling for power and money now, not principle, not liberation, not cause and not justice. Those latter terms are only being used to accuse the other side of treason. And the Palestinian people, including Hamas and Fateh supporters, are paying the price for these two factions’ lack of vision, foresight and intelligence. What exactly, one wonders, is Fateh’s prize for deposing Hamas? What promises has Washington made that this will help the Palestinian cause? And what about Hamas? Where are those promises of reform? Where are those trials for corruption? Where is the transparency to show what happened to all those millions in cash that Hamas collected ostensibly to relieve the suffering of the Palestinian people, all the Palestinian people? Both factions have so little to gain, but so much to lose by fighting each other. Yet, apparently, both are allowing themselves to be played like puppets, oblivious to the fact that they are exposing themselves naked and devoid of substance before their own people, let alone the rest of the world. Time to start again for Palestinians. Get rid of the sandpit and its unruly children.
