At least twenty Palestinians were killed, victims to recent one-day Israeli aggressive attacks. It was not the first time that so many martyrs fell by the Israeli army's firepower, its the rockets and artillery shells. Yet they were bloodiest operations that occurred since the Hamas capture of the Strip and up till now. The Israeli government is seemingly aiming at implementing a policy of escalating its aggression, with the intention of luring the world into adjusting to the ever increasing tally of Palestinian causalities, and to indifferently watch the tragic events as routines, even if the number of the dead soared to hundreds. The international community, and the Arab world in particular, are required to prevent this Israeli plan, and to move in two directions: First is to put an end to these Israeli deadly aggressions in order to save the blood of the Gazans. Second is to halt the launching of the crude projectiles which are not the equals of the mighty Israeli firepower on the one hand, and, on the other, they contradict the overall PA, Arab and international attitude toward a negotiated peace process on the. A reckless confrontation with Israel is not the prudent choice. Paradoxically enough, this Israeli escalation in which the excessive force is being used, has been undertaken while the US President George W. Bush was still in the region, and when the final status negotiation were resumed .As such, Israel indicates that its concept of peace has no relation whatsoever to the spirit of Annapolis, and the Conference's call for calm, and putting an end to violence and bloodshed. It is unquestionable that the current state of division and dualism under which the Palestinians live, between the PA's virtual participation in the peace process and the stringent Hamas position that rejects the ongoing negotiation, and insists on keeping the movement's grip over the besieged Gaza Strip. This is the window through which Israel usually enters to continue the process of implementing its settlement activities, and its physical liquidation of activists- both in the West Bank and Gaza, despite its "peaceful" pledges and promises. The international community should pressure the Israeli side for an end to its deadly attacks and settlement activities. More important is a solution to the Palestinian division and the return of the PA to its headquarters in Gaza, with Hamas joining the ranks of the legal political factions. The Cairo understandings which constitute referential foundation to such a solution are there – President Mahmud Abbas pointed to them in a recent speech. Hamas and Fatah should bear in mind that national unity, as the sole haven for all Palestinians, should be the guiding light for all Palestinian factions, now and forever.
